Glazed Fire-Rated Doors & Partitions: A Specifier's Guide

2025-10-08 7 min read

Glazed fire-rated doors and partitions allow architects to keep lobbies, atria and corridors visually open while still meeting fire-compartmentation rules. Done well, they are almost invisible. Done badly, they fail testing and look heavy.

What 'glazed fire-rated' really means

A glazed fire-rated assembly uses certified fire-rated glass set in a steel or composite frame engineered to hold the glass in place even as it heats up. The whole assembly — frame, glass, beading, intumescent material and hardware — is tested together.

Integrity (E) vs insulation (EI)

Integrity-rated (E) glass blocks flame and hot gases for the rated time. Insulation-rated (EI) glass also limits temperature rise on the unexposed face — important when occupants must walk close to the partition during evacuation. Always confirm which is required for the specific opening.

Where glazed fire doors work best

Office lobbies, hotel atria, healthcare reception areas, retail facades, conference rooms, and educational corridors. Anywhere a solid steel door would be too closed off, but the wall still has to hold a fire rating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is fire-rated glass the same as toughened glass?

No. Toughened glass is impact-resistant but breaks under sustained heat. Fire-rated glass uses special compositions (interlayer or wire) tested to specific fire-resistance durations.

Can I get a 120-minute glazed fire door?

Yes — Acodor offers glazed fire-rated assemblies up to 120 minutes integrity, subject to glass and frame specification.
